Grass Roots Women of Vanuatu

Empowerment. By the women. For the women.

With climate change driving back-to-back natural disasters, the grass roots women of Vanuatu are taking action. They are determined to empower themselves, build capacity, and secure a permanent seat, for themselves, at the decision-making table. When revered elder and leader, Mary Jack, reached out to the Agency of Women, we answered her call.

Meet Mary Jack

For over 40 years, Mary Jack has been a fierce advocate for the women of Vanuatu—on the national stage, across the Pacific, at the United Nations, and in high-profile meetings with global leaders like Hillary Clinton.

Having witnessed millions of aid dollars fail to create the lasting impact the women need, Mary took action. In 2021, six years after the devastation of Cyclone Pam, she said, “Enough!” and reached out to Wendy at the Agency of Women for support to build a national body to represent, advocate and build capacity for the self-determination of Vanuatu’s grass-roots women and girls.

Mitingar Women and Girls Association was born.

Introducing Mitingar

Together, with dedicated teams of ‘Special Agents,’ we have worked alongside Mary, and the women of Vanuatu, to establish ‘Mitingar Women and Girls Association’; their very own national representative body.

Mitingar is more than just an organisation for ni-Van women; it is a pilot model designed to be duplicated by grassroots women worldwide, creating a global movement of empowered grassroots women leading change from the ground up.

Mitingar's Goal Will Transform a Nation

With the Agency of Women providing know how and resources, Mitingar Women and Girls Association is now a fully registered, Vanuatu not-for-profit organisation, governed by an exceptional local, and international, executive board.

Phase 2  of Mitingar’s organisational development plan is now underway. Over the next three years, with the support of Patrons and the Agency of Women, Mitingar will build the infrastructure needed to connect all grass roots women in 83 inhabited islands across Vanuatu’s five, remote provinces.

In the process, Mitingar’s duplicatable model will be academically-appraised ready to be shared with other grass roots women around the world.
